Italy Photo book 1920s + 1930s gravures Modena Verona Palermo Genua

A very rare book full of beautiful full page photographs (in high quality photo gravure technique)
of the landscape, cities and villages of Old Italy in the 1920s and 1930s.

The photographer Kurt Hielscher travelled through Italien in the 1920s + 1930s and made over 8000 photos w/ premier photo equipment; his Zeiss Ikon/Ica camera and Zeiss objectives on Agfa Chromo Isorapid and Chromo Isolar plates and Isopan films. Some photos were taken with a Contax.

This book in the new 1939 edition is Volume II of a book set (Volume I was from 1938), which has been published after almost 50,000 copies have been sold from the first large 1925 Orbis Terrarum edition.

This book Volume II, represents the best 240 photos out of 8000 from Old Italy.
The difference to the first edition from the 1920's are the new 1930s photos and some replacements of the 1920s photographs. Hielscher took several additional trips to Italy after the first book has been published and his photo archive increased from initial 4,000 photos in the 1920s to 8,000 photos in the late 1930's.

In good exterior and very good interior condition
Shelfwear along edges, linen partly frayed, mild foxing to endpapers, fait foxing to edges, ex-libiris on front pastedown, else ok with minor traces of use and age.
Photo pages in near mint condition.

All pages are complete and tight in the binding.
