The Mystery of Shabwa
Among South Arabian Bedouins in the land of the Sabaeans

This German book documents a daring expedition into the interior of South Arabia, a region that is now part of Yemen.

The true value of this edition lies in its extensive collection of photographic plates, which capture places and people that few Westerners had seen at that time. The book takes the reader on a visual journey starting from the coast, featuring detailed images of the shipbuilding and the fishing harbor in Mukalla. Helfritz documents the architecture and daily life in the port town of Schichr, providing a glimpse into the maritime history of the region.

As the expedition moves inland, the photographs document the rugged landscapes and remote settlements. There are striking images of the city of Senna, including its unique architecture and the ancient tombs found there. The author also captures the impressive castle of the Sultan of Gubun, offering insight into the local power structures of the era. The route leads through the unforgiving terrain of the stone desert and various oases, documenting the harsh environment traversed by the explorers.

Beyond the architecture and landscapes, the book serves as an important ethnographic study. Helfritz’s camera focused intensely on the local population and the distinct tribes of the region. The plates include portraits and scenes involving the Mahra and Manahil tribes, as well as the Sei'ar. You will find depictions of Bedouin women, slaves of the Mahra and Manahil, and warriors, such as a comrade of the Minschi. The images also show everyday scenes, bringing the culture of 1930s South Arabia to life. Please note that the text of this book is entirely in German, making it a perfect collector's item for those interested in historical photography, the Hadhramaut region, and Arabian exploration.
