Steel becomes Power

Ultra-Rare 1940 German Henschel Presentation Album: SAR Class 23 Locomotives – With HUGE 40 inch Fold-Out Cross-Section!

This is a true "holy grail" artifact for collectors of Henschel, South African Railways (SAR), and steam locomotive history.

You are bidding on an original deluxe commemorative album, published by the legendary German locomotive works, Henschel & Sohn (Kassel). This was not a book for public sale; it was a high-end presentation volume celebrating the delivery of 98 massive Class 23 4-8-2 ("2D1") steam locomotives to the South African Railways & Harbours (SAR&H).

This "Bildwerk" (pictorial work) documents the complete construction of the 98 SAR Class 23 locomotives, showing every stage of the build, from the roaring foundries and massive frame construction to the final assembly and the pristine, finished locomotives "ex-works" at the Kassel factory.

The highlight of this volume is its series of beautiful, full-color photographic plates.
These are not standard prints. Each color photo is "tipped-in"—printed separately on high-quality paper and meticulously mounted onto the pages by hand. This was an expensive and luxurious printing method reserved for special publications.

Another highlight of this volume is tucked in the rear: ,,A massive, multi-panel gatefold / fold-out technical drawing measuring approximately nearly 40 inches!

This stunning schematic shows a complete, detailed cross-section of the superheated steam locomotive and its tender. It includes tables with all primary technical data and main dimensions.

This is a dream for modelers, engineers, and technical historians.

The entire book is printed in rich, high-definition Photogravure. This expensive printing process gives the photographs an incredible depth, tone, and clarity that standard printing cannot match.

This is one of the finest examples of industrial publishing of the 1940's you will ever see.
