Chicago of the Desert

This is the exceptionally rare, original 1932 first edition of Hans Helfritz's trailblazing travelogue, "Chicago der Wuste," published in Berlin.

In this gripping account, author and explorer Hans Helfritz documents his daring and dangerous expedition into the Hadhramaut region of Southern Arabia (modern-day Yemen)—a land then almost entirely forbidden to Westerners.

He was one of the very first Europeans to venture into this remote territory and photograph the legendary "skyscraper" cities of Shibam and Tarim. These are ancient, towering metropolises built entirely of mud-brick, rising 8, 9, or even 10 stories high from the desolate desert floor.

Helfritz was stunned to find this ancient, vertical architecture, and his evocative title, "Chicago of the Desert," perfectly captures the surreal, alien modernity he discovered in a land time had forgotten.
