Der KdF Wagen von A - Z
[The Strength Through Joy Car from A to Z]

In preparation for the delivery of the KdF cars, Deutsche Volkswagenwerk GmbH in Berlin published this early A to Z handbook.

It is richly illustrated with reproductions of photographs in duotone and drawings. The photographs were taken by Georg von Stavenhagen and the Volkswagenwerk archive, the illustrations and drawings by Thomas Abeking.

The guide is packed with all kinds of illustrations and information, just like you would find in the best "glove compartment manuals". How to look after your new VW sedan or ragtop, how to maintain it, how to rectify faults and how to repair it.

The book is one of the most beautiful, concise and user-friendly automotive books of its kind ever developed. When you open the book to the center double-page spread, you see a superb, oversized Phantom view of the right side of a KdF car. The lettering on the phantom view leads to finger notches on the page edges, similar to the notches on the page edges of better dictionaries.

If you follow the callout line from the VW tank to its notch in the upper right corner of the center double-page spread, the book automatically opens to pages 72-73, which contain all sorts of pictures and information about the VW tank and the refueling of the KdF car. Each of the notches leads the reader very quickly to the desired information.
