Little Car on Great Journey

Wonderful 1949 post-war photographic record about the most famous German car, the Volkswagen Beetle, also known as Type 1 Volkswagen split-window. First hand accounts of taking journeys throughout Germany in the car, review of the factory in Wolfsburg, the post war production, the workers, industrial details and of course many stunning photos in gravure of this little car.

The re-opening of the Wolfsburg Volkswagen car factory is largely accredited to British Army officer Major Ivan Hirst. Hirst was ordered to take control of the heavily WW2 bombed factory, which the Americans had captured. His first task was to remove an unexploded bomb that had fallen through the roof and lodged itself between some pieces of irreplaceable production equipment; if the bomb had exploded, the Beetle's fate would have been sealed.
